The joy of growing
Perfect weather outside for planting stuff in the garden with sun now after big rain yesterday making the soil perfect for new plants and helping the ones that are planted to get established.
A tray of winter squash Blue Ballet absolutely perfect for planting, roots hold the soil in the pot together and leafs are not too big or started too turn yellow due too lack of nutrient lack in the pot.
This is what’s make me happy too have really good looking plants giving the the best possible opportunity for the summer.
Seeding to last and you loose part of the short Swedish summer and seed too early and your plants get too big and stress, there’s no right time too seed but you go on your experience from previous years and hope for the best sometime seeding multiple batches just too make sure you have the best plants

Riktigt hög luftfuktighet utomhus då passar det bra att jobba i växthuset
Många bäddar med grönsaker som har stått över vintern är nu färdiga för sina sommargrödor, vårvitlök och persilja ersätts med chili och änglatrumpeter.
Vi fortsätter att inspireras av @skillnadens och kör med täckodling i år på fler grödor där det passar in.
1 jämna till bädden efter att vi rensade bort det som fanns kvar
2 två 10 l hinkar med färsk hönsgödsel från våra Torparhöns sprids ut ovanpå jorden
3 Fårens sista ensilag bal har fått stå orörd för länge och börjar brinna, ingen riktig brand utan mer att det mjölksyrade gräset har kommit i kontakt med luften och en komposterings process har startat som alstrar värme, kolla andra bilden så ser ni hur det ryker om den när vi lägger ett tjockt lager ovanpå
4 Mitt i bädden har vi satt två övervintringskrukor med Änglatrumpeter i dom är mycket hungriga växter så rötterna söker sig ut och hittar näring och fukt i bädden
5 Äntligen det roliga när man får plantera chili, bara ta handen och gör ett hål genom ensilaget och plantera i jorden under
6 Vattna plantorna ordentligt för att få bra kontakt mellan jordklumpen med rötter och jorden samt resten av bädden
Ensilaget kommer bli mat till mikroliv som gråsuggor och maskar som bryter ner växtdelar och gör näringen tillgång för nya växter

The very first big project we did as a wwoof farm taking on interns in 2009 was too build a wind shed for the few cows. And all following years feeding and caring for the cows during winter has been fun and rewarding but also really heavy so a big day now when the old hangout for the cows will be Storage and a garage with the cows happy moved in to the Ark stable.
All so a really good indoor job today when the rain is poring down outside

Apple blossoms
In Japan the cherry blossom is celebrated I think the humble apple is my favorite
I was a kid under apple trees and now as a adult I still enjoy them just as much, I like the diversity and have a lot of favorites. When you have a farm with plenty of space it’s not really a problem at first but now when we hit 300 different varieties it’s starting to be a lot. And also the question what is a variety really, a lot of our trees only exists here and from the unique mother tree where grafting material was collected. This one of a kind apple was greatly loved by the person that originally pland them maybe it was a seedling they found or a local variety not found when inventories were conducted.

Hard choices
The last group of cows left the farm yesterday for a summer in a nature reserve in Blekinge about 1,5 h away But this girl was keep home and she is not happy about it, she had a rough start with a mom that really wanted her but didn’t have enough milk so we have been helping her with extra food.
Separating a calf from its mom is usually done at the age of 8 months when they are ready to leave the nest.
This one is barely 4 months but the risk of letting her go with the rest of the herd was too big if the mom don’t have enough milk and she isn’t big enough to only eat grass.
Instead she stay here on the farm with a few cows among others a cow with a small calf that hopefully takes on this girl too.
It’s a hard choice separating a calf both for it and the mom but it’s also a easy decision when you look on what is best long term for the calf.

Giant hogweed
A very fitting name of one of the most impressive plants I know, it’s one of the fascinating herb you can grow.
It has a lot of super powers like growing flowers 3 m tall giving you the felling of Alice in wonderland walking among them, it also has a very effective defense being photo toxic, if you get it’s sap on your skin and have it exposed to the sun it develop a chemical burn that is very nasty.
If you see it enjoy it at a safe distance and keep your kids away!
It’s a invasive species introduced as a garden plant for its unique appearance, but is now mostly considered a pest and best eradicated when you find it.
We are fighting our with our animals that eat it and digging up all the plants we find.

Best of days
Cows got a new pasture loaded with dandelion, grass and herbs.
After rain we now got sunshine and heat so the grass is growing quickly.
Grass has a best before day and the shorter it is the more the cows love it, shifting the group between different fields insure that they get grazed evenly all season.

Bananas are free!
The winter greenhouse is dismantled and all our bananas can now grow free in our big tunnel house, they probably prefer being outside but a Swedish summer can be too cold for them.
High hope’s too see some banana flowers this year on at least one of our varieties, if we keep finding more must have varieties it’s likely that we need to expand the winter greenhouse for them.
