Bumblebee are here
A very nice surprise of three nests of Bombus terrestris the Larger earth bumblebee a native species, in spring these colonies were all started by a single queen and how now grown big and ready for their new home with us helping too pollinating our tomatoes and other plants in our greenhouse.
Loss of habitat threatens bumblebee a diverse landscape with different types of herbs and trees together with natural nest sites like stone fence are in short demand together with excessive us of crop spray that is harmful to most pollinating insects.
Unlike bees a bumblebee nests aren’t us for more then a year, during the summer/autumn time new queens are hatched and they overwinter on their own to restart the cycle next spring so we hope that this hive will produce a lot off new queens that can help too repopulate our farm and the farms around
In September during open hours we will have a closer look at the bumblebee and how you can help them in your garden
