Sheep/Farmer

Sheep/Farmer
The big day is finally here when we are sorting the lambs that have gotten too be really big now.

Our new Ark stable for the cows have given the sheep a big hand me down when they move in to their old wind shed allowing us to expand the flock we have of Klövsjöfår.
We do the historical derivative work for this breed and traveling over half the country too track down the last individual and save the breed from extinction, now more then 15 years later it’s a official recognized breed by the department of agriculture.

Being one of the oldest flocks in existence and part of the Heard book it feels great being able to grow the flock saving all of these years female lambs for breeding

Our breeding ram here have done a excel job with the ladies last fall and have now work as a babysitter after the lambs got separated from their moms.
This year have been extra good with also a number of young rams moving to other farms to continue the conservation

Stora morotstestet

Tulip Ice Cream

Big thanks for this anonymous gift that arrived in Friday’s mail 🙏
I definitely have a sweet spot for over the top tulips and the variety Ice Cream has it all 😍

No wonder Tulip mania happened in the Netherlands 17th century where people became obsessed with tulips and the price skyrocketed and a single bulb was sold for 10 times the annual income of a skilled craftsmen

I’m planting these ones now so they have a chance too sprout and be ready to flower in spring, a good way too protect your tulips from pests and fungi is too take them up after flowering letting the leafs dye back and not plant them again until the fall

My grandparents did this every year with tulips and daffodils planting the whole veggie garden in the fall that became a field of flower in spring too later be taken up give way for the vegetables.

Chinese Imperial peaches

Chinese Imperial peaches
A unusual favorite in our greenhouse is the Doughnut peach, originally from China but exists in more places now.

Our tree is originally a souvenir from the time as a gardening student traveling in Europe and I manage to locate a Oriane tree from the French horticultural research station INRA.

A dark red skin variety with white flesh very sweet with a hint of honey and super juicy, a medium too small tree very suitable for a small garden or greenhouse.

For more then 10 years no it’s been a centerpiece in our greenhouse and it really pulls it’s own weight, we will start grafting it this year now after the harvest and hopefully harvest some new trees next year

Extinct

This is the only remnant of the Swedish breed Moliljan originating from Småland and the village of Målilla not too far from where I’m originally from.

It belongs to a group of chicken breeds created by Sweden’s most prolific chicken expert Martin Silverudd.

Unfortunately what you see on this picture is not Moliljan but a mix breed, they originate from the last lead I came up with when it came to localize a pure breed flock

But regrettably I was too late and these flock was mixed with other chicken breeds making the offspring useless for conservation purposes

Artichoke premier

It’s been a funny year growing and testing new varieties of artichoke and seeing how they grow and the diversity in appearance.

If you look closely on them you can almost see the relation to thistles especially if you don’t harvest them in time and they start flowering

Dahlia abundance

Love red flowers and especially the varieties of heirloom dahlias that are in full bloom right now

Definitely more labor intense then most but equally rewarding now when they are in full bloom until the frost comes

Planting in early spring and covered with a layer of straw for the weeds then it’s just been too waiting until they are big enough and you see the first flowers In the beginning of July

The old heirloom varieties are very hardy and grow really big with a massive rootstock sometimes up too 20 kg of you don’t split them

In the fall after the frost I dig them up cutting off everything above ground then using a water hose too rinse of all the dirt then letting them dry for a day or two before taking them in too the root cellar for the winter.
