Queen Silvia

Once upon a time there lived a king
and when he got married, a pastor in Småland named a whole breed of hens after his new queen.

The king is still sitting on the throne with his queen but we will look more at the pastor who created the breed Queen Silvia.

Martin Silverudd was a unique man with a very special ability to recognize different chicken individuals just by looking, he became interested in chickens early on and wanted to help small egg producers create modern breeds or variants of the breeds that already existed.

Queen silvia had the working name Rixton and was created to lay brown eggs and the parents are two of the most well-known breeds as White Leghorn VL and Rhode Island Red RIR, its unique pattern comes from VL
and is hidden behind the white color of the breed.

Queen Silvia was one of the more successful breeds Martin Silverudd created and was in commercial facilities until the 2000s when we took over animals from there and continued the work of preserving the
breed.

Martin Silverudd produced several varieties of the breed with different basic colors and some that laid green eggs, the varieties that survived until conservation started are

-Queen silvia Silver a black and white race that
-Queen Silvia Gold where the white is replaced with a warm brown color
in combination with white
-Queen Silvia Silver Shadow a variant of silver but which has a bleaching gene that turns black to gray in single set and almost white animals if the animal inherits two traits one from each parent.

These three breeds were all left on a farm outside Norrtälje and from there animals were spread over the years to other breeders, however to a small extent as the information about the breed was very scarce
before we started working with the breeds
