Why do some bulls have a nose ring?
For us, it is an exception that we put in a ring most of our bulls do not, but some selected ones must have it.
For many years, Var has been working with conservation societies and the Department of Agriculture to save livestock genetic resources and one of the easiest things to collect is bull fluid.
This is done at a central facility in Sverge and before the bull goes there for duty he must be trained to be handled by the staff.
Most often this is done with a halter or collar, but for the safety of the staff, the bull must also have a nose ring.
The tissue in the nose is very sensitive, just like on us humans, and should the bull become threatening, you can use a lead stick, which looks like a stick with a handle for a hook you can attach to the ring to make sure the bull doesn’t get too close.
Once the bull has contributed and is back at home on the farm, the ring can be removed again and he can return to his normal life of eating and tending to the cows
