Corn originate from the Americans and some varieties need more sun and het to produce but you also have a few of these heritage corn that do well even in Sweden

Best is to eat them fresh but also easy to dry only peeling the leafs away from the cob an keeping them warm and well ventilated, you can keep them like they are for unique decorations or grind the corn to flour

Chunky

Keeping in line with there ancestors Gabriella have fattened up over summer preparing for a long hard winter and too become a mum again and have enough resources to produce milk for the new calf. Farmers in olden times really struggled to find enough winter food for their animals so only the animals that had the ability to gain in weight during the rich summer survived the winter. Even if our cows now have plenty of food they still have that ability to gain weight fast during the grazing season

Leaky garden

In season right now Leeks

One of the longest crops we grow starting to seed them in the end of January inside before transplant outside in spring then weeding and watering all summer to get the perfect leeks right now.

You can eat the whole plant from the crispy roots too green part of the stem. Leeks is the perfect autumn and winter vegetable not suffering from frost and a light freeze like most other veggies, we grow a few different varieties with some being new for this year, if all works out we will grow seeds from them next year

The shift

Summer greenhouse is done for this year and today was the big clean out. Surklöverrova in our first bed is now safe in the root seller and the other beds with mint, basilica, new Zeeland spinach and tagetes are now emptied and manure is being turned in to feed the soil and our plants. Canola together with parsley and swisschard is being planted for the winter season, the perfect job a rainy day

The most surprising and delightful fruit you can grow is the Quince, a close relative to apples and pears this beauty is inedible unless you cook it. But before that you must enjoy its best feature its scent filling your kitchen and rooms with the most fantastic fragrance.

Yacón

Time to harvest more unusual tubers

Yacón “Inka” Smallanthus sonchifolius also known as Inkan apple and sugarroot

Become a fairly big plant with yellow flowers preferring a rich soil and not to much moisture. After being nipd by the first frost it’s time to harvest. And even if we grow a lot of South American stuff this particular species is a new addition.

Checking out our walnut trees and it looks too be a big harvest this year and each walnut is massive. This is the regular variety or species you find for sale but we also have Black walnuts, Manchurian walnuts a few different Japanese and many more. Together with producing a lot of walnuts they a also a great windbreaker and habitat for birds, insects and small game. Together with being fast growing makes walnuts too a essential part of the ecosystem that is the farm

The three stages of cucumber

A favorite snacks ate most party’s and also pickled together with a variety of meals the Favör II varieties is very unusual and this year one of the plants we are saving seeds from.

When seed saving you grow them just like regular cucumbers but you leave them on the plant too mature completely turning from the regular green to a strong yellow more resembling a honeydew melon. Seeds are now saved and covers our cucumber need for years too come together with having plenty to share. Too preserve the true variety you need to avoid growing other cucumber varieties in the area too make sure no cross pollination takes place, that also include melons and other related species.
